Tombstone Tuesday - Isaac Grindstaff and Prudence Ledford
Headstone photos of my fourth great-grandfather Isaac Grindstaff (1774/6 - 1866) and his second wife Prudence Ledford (1812-1883). They are buried at Bakersville Cemetery in Bakersville, Mitchell Co, North Carolina. I believe this cemetery may have been originally called Grindstaff Cemetery because so many of the Grindstaffs are buried there. I understand there are two sections to this cemetery, one farther up the hill than the other. This photo was taken by my dear online friend and distant Grindstaff cousin, Anita Wages.

I am researching MARTHA "DOROTHY" E. GRINDSTAFF, born in 1845, who was the daughter of ISAA GRINDSTAFF and PRUDENCE LEFORD. MARTHA GRINDSTAFF married JAMES "JOHN" W. SWEAT, probably in Mitchell County, NC or a surrounding county around 1870. They had two children: ISAAC A. SWEAT born circa 1873 and LULA / LOUISA VICTORIA SWEAT in 1878. JAMES and MARTHA SWEAT eventually moved to Smyth County, Virginia between 1880 and 1900. After MARTHA's death, JAMES W. SWEAT married my great-grandmother, REBECCA DAVIDSON in 1916. He was married under the name of JOHN W. SWEAT, and used the name JOHN W. SWEAT until his death. I am trying to locate the marriage of JAMES "JOHN" W. SWEAT and MARTHA GRINDSTAFF, in hopes that the parents of JAMES "JOHN" W. SWEAT may be listed on the license. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
